Hard disk

The Hard Disk is where the data is stored within the PC. Hard Disks have the capacity to contain several megabytes or even a few gigabytes of data.

Hit

This occurs when a web page is accessed by a user or a program accesses the page. A hit was registered on this particularly web page (the term "Hit" in the Glossary) when you requested to look at the information contained within it.

Home Page

A introductory page within the web site that provides a navigational system like a table of contents to view other pages within the site. It is the first page that will appear when viewing a web site. It is also know as the index page with the HTML programming community.

Horizontal rule

A horizontal line created by the HTML tag used to separate items in an HTML document. Horizontal rules are displayed by the browser, and as such, an HTML author only has limited control over their appearance.

Host

A Computer that provides a particular service to a user such as storing a web site. These servers are typically owned, operated, maintained by a company or organization. If you use a host service, also called local internet service provider, it is common that your Web site address will have the name of your server within the address itself.

Hostname

A computer's "internet name". For instance, you are reading a file from a computer whose hostname is "gsu.edu"

Hotspots

Exact positions on the screen that will result in a particular event occurring should the mouse be clicked - an example may be clicking on a particular city shown on a map that results in information about that city being displayed.

Hot Java

Hot Java is a Web Browser which can display "executable content" written in the Java Programming Language

Hub

A network term used for any device to which several others are attached, providing a common point of connection to all other devices in the network.

Hyperlink

An icon, graphic, or word in a Web page file that, when clicked with the mouse, will automatically open another file for viewing. Hyperlinks, when clicked on, can dispaly a new graphic, start an animation sequence, go to a different page in a Web site, or to an entirely new Web site.

Hypermedia

Basically, Hypertext that also contains Multimedia components.

Hypertext

Text that contains links which can be clicked with a mouse. When the user "clicks" the link they are taken to another document or a different section of the current document. This Glossary is a good example of Hypertext.

Hypertext Markup Language

The language of the World Wide Web. Everything you see on a web page is HTML and interpreted by Web Browsers

Method of connecting to the Internet World-Wide Web
