Gateway

A gateway is an interface that connects different networks together - this handles the transfer of data between the networks & any conversion that is required to enable the data that has been extracted from one network to be read in the other network.

General Protection Fault

A Windows term - Each program running under windows is given its own exclusive area of memory which is protected from other applications & a general protection fault occurs if this exclusive memory is accessed by another program.

GIF Animation

The clay-mation of the internet. It will allow a limited form of sprite-based animation. You can add a smaller image to a larger one and change its co-ordinates in following images.

Gigabyte

A bit is the smallest unit of information understood by a computer. A bit can take a value of 0 or 1. A byte is made up of 8 bits that is large enough to contain a single character. For example the character 2 would be equivalent to "00000010" when represented as a byte . A Kilobyte is equivalent to 1024 bytes. A Megabyte is equivalent to 1024 Kilobytes. A Gigabyte is equivalent to 1024 Megabytes.

Gopher

An application whose purpose is to locate, retrieve & record information from the Internet. Developed at the University of Minnesota in 1991. The word Gopher takes its name from the words "Go for" - somebody who goes and gets anything that you ask of him or her.

Graphical User Interface

A Graphical User Interface is designed so that the user can perform tasks by using a mouse to point & click on an icon. The user can perform any task with either the mouse or the keyboard.

Graphics

Pictures or images, either scanned for online use or created with graphics software. Graphic file formats include GIF, JPEG, BMP, PCX, and TIFF.

Graphics Card

A piece of hardware that is linked to the monitor & enables the screen based output of a program to be visible to the user.

Graphic Interchange Format

A method used to compress and transfer graphics images into digital information; it is commonly used to transfer graphics files on the Internet because of its excellent display of solid colors in all Web browsers. These files are compressed so they take up the minimum amount of space & can therefore be downloaded a lot quicker than other graphics file. GIF files are typically used for: Backgrounds; Displaying banners; Advertisements; Buttons. The files unlike other graphical file types are limited to 256 colors. GIF Files are stored in a number of different formats such as: 87a; Interlaced 87a; 89a; Interlaced 89a. The interlaced versions are designed to allow the image to be gradually revealed as it is downloaded. GIF Files can also be: Animated - gives the impression of a video. A collection of GIFS, each picture slightly different from the previous. Same principle as a film; Transparent - Blends in with the background.

Groupware

Software that enables groups of people to work together - Microsoft Word documents that they can all access, change etc - the software will maintain a current version for all of the users. Very useful for large projects where a number of PC files have to be kept up to date by a number of different people who have different responsibilities. Lotus Notes is one of the best examples of groupware
